  News > Blocking E-Mail Attachments
  Issued - 1/27/2006

For those clients using the AFFCOM / UniPro e-mail server, we have further strengthened protection against possible virus infection. Most viruses are carried as e-mail attachments, thus we are blocking specific file extensions that are often the culprit. The e-mail server will automatically block all files ending in the extensions listed below. Since some files ending with these extensions, particularly ZIP files, may be files that you wish to receive; the system will send you a message advising that a file with a specific blocked extension has been detected at the server. In this case you can advise the sender to resend the file by renaming the file extension to something other than those listed below. You can simply rename it to the proper extension once you have received it.

  • .ade Microsoft Access project extension
  • .adp Microsoft Access project
  • .app Application file
  • .bas Microsoft Visual Basic class module
  • .bat Batch file
  • .chm Compiled HTML Help file
  • .class Java class file

We have taken this precaution since viruses are often automatically e-mailed to you from infected computers whose user is known to you. In these cases, many assume the attachment must be safe since the sender is recognized. Not always being the case, we have provided this additional measure of protection and security.

For clients not on the AFFCOM / UniPro e-mail server, be very cautious when an attachment with the above extension is received. You should always confirm with the sender that the file is legitimate and safe.

If you have any questions in this matter, please feel free to contact us.
