  News > Web Site Updating
  Issued - 3/23/2004
    We were asked yesterday how web sites might be updated. Having written a short article on this sometime back, I thought I would again share the answers with everyone.

Visual HTML Generators / Editors:
Programs like Microsoft FrontPage, Adobe’s GoLive and Macromedia’s Contribute are all examples of visual HTML generators. Visual Generators work somewhat like a combination of Microsoft Word and Excel. While placing text or images into specific cells, the generator automatically writes the HTML code in the background. Links can be visually added as well. Naturally, since visual generators produce straight HTML code,which has limited functionality, they are typically limited to small informational sites. Visual HTML generators cost in the $150 to $200 neighborhood.

Microsoft Word and Corel’s WordPerfect may also be used as visual HTML generators, but they are a poor substitute for the above.

Familiarity with HTML would also allow a person to write a web site using only Notepad. This method however can be very tedious and extremely cumbersome.

*Database Update:

Most dynamic web sites extract data from a database. Locally updating the database and uploading the updated database to the site will automatically update the web site. While much easier than using an HTML generator, there are several issues relative to timing, particularly if visitors to the site complete forms with subsequent data being written to the database.

Furthermore, during the upload of the database a web site is down.

*Administrative Screen Update:

Written for use with your regular browser, secure admin screens provide standard forms for updating your site. The advantages of admin screens are many, including:

  • updates are immediately written to the website;
  • the site is never down;
  • little or no learning curve;
  • linking is automatic

* Web sites utilizing a database must be written in a programming language that allows for extraction of data over the web. Common examples are ASP, PHP and CGI. A translator processes the page and outputs the result in HTML.
