News > AFFCOM Announces provision of Linux Servers and Networks
  Issued - 3/15/2004
Acknowledging that the provision for the supply and services of Linux Servers in the state of Montana has been lacking behind many other areas, AFFCOM will be entering into this particular sector of the computing market. Having supplied servers and network administrative services for three years, AFFCOM is not new to the server supply market, but decided 1½ years ago to focus solely on the development of financial, database and Internet software.

During this latter stage, AFFCOM came to experience and recognize the tremendous benefits of using the Linux operating system, particularly as it relates to small business servers. Reliability, security, performance and costs are absolutely unparalleled when compared to any version of Windows server. At the current time, in excess of 65% of the world’s Internet Service Providers use Linux systems.

The Linux operating system, unlike the costly licensing requirements inherent to other operating systems such as Windows or Unix, is totally free of charge. Linux users don’t have to add in costs for the operating system, user licenses and other ancillary software, which will typically cost significantly more than the server hardware itself.

Linux is an operating system that began its life as a kernel written by Linus Torvalds of Finland. Linux is a Unix-like operating system. The significant difference between Linux and the many versions of Unix is that the Linux operating system is not proprietary. Linux, with its open source code, has developers worldwide that add software to the operating system all of which is absolutely free to the Linux user.

Unlike Microsoft systems, the stability of Linux will commonly allow the system to run for hundreds of days, even years, without any need to reboot. While costs are of a concern to all of us, we will not compromise security, stability, usability and functionality to achieve economy. In all of these areas, however, Linux achieves substantial superiority over its competitors.

There is no need, under Linux, to change, upgrade, or modify your current workstations or personal computing devices whether they use Windows XP, 2000, ME, 98 or any other version. These are all seamlessly ported to Linux. While we recognize that the single largest obstacle to Linux will be resistance to change, we will also be offering full training and remote administrative services. Remote administrative services can include any level of direct services right from our offices whether it is assisting with server modifications or performing your backup remotely and retaining a secure copy in our office.

Currently AFFCOM’s start up date for the supply of Linux servers is set for July 1, 2004. If, however, the customer wants to remain a Windows server user, AFFCOM will continue to supply Windows servers as well. If you have any questions regarding Linux, please feel free to contact us at your convenience. If you are looking for a server product prior to July 1st, please contact us as well. I am confident we can meet earlier deadlines.

As always you can rely on AFFCOM for the best in innovative enterprising solutions.
